40 Years of Scandinavian Excellence: Celebrating 25 Years of Primare at Toma Audio
Share
There is a specific kind of magic that happens when high-end engineering meets the quiet, intentional design of Scandinavia. It’s a sense of balance: an assurance that you aren't just buying a piece of technology, but an heirloom of sound.
This year, we are popping the champagne at Toma Audio for a very special reason. Primare, the Swedish powerhouse of high-fidelity audio, is approaching its 40th anniversary. Even more significant for our local community is that it has been 25 years since Primare first landed on Australian shores.
For us, this isn't just an industry milestone; it’s a personal one. Toma Audio has been a proud Primare dealer for every single one of those 25 years. We’ve seen the brand evolve from the minimalist vision of Bo Christensen in the mid-80s to the cutting-edge, streaming-capable masterpieces we audition in our showroom today.
But why has this relationship lasted a quarter of a century? The answer lies in a single Swedish word: Lagom.
The Art of Lagom: Not Too Much, Not Too Little
In Australia, we often strive for the "biggest" or the "loudest." But the Swedish philosophy of Lagom (pronounced lah-gom) offers a more sophisticated alternative. It translates roughly to "just the right amount."
In the world of Hi-Fi, Lagom is the ultimate mood-setter. It means a Primare amplifier doesn't try to dominate your living room with flashing lights or aggressive heat sinks. Instead, it offers a "warm, analog soul" wrapped in a chassis of understated elegance. It’s about balance: the perfect harmony between performance, design, and usability.
When you sit down at the end of a long day, perhaps unwinding with a glass of red, you don't want to fight with your equipment. You want the technology to act as an "invisible backbone" to your experience. Primare excels here. Their equipment doesn't shout; it sings.

A Quarter-Century Partnership in the Gold Coast
We’ve been here since the beginning of Primare's Australian journey. Over the last 25 years, we’ve installed Primare systems in beachside penthouses in Surfers Paradise, sprawling estates in the Northern Rivers, and dedicated listening rooms across South-East Queensland.
What we love most about the brand: and what our customers appreciate: is its consistency. A Primare system purchased from us two decades ago still possesses that same "unadulterated" musicality that the new models do. It is a "sound investment" in every sense of the word. We’ve grown alongside the brand, and our expertise in matching Primare’s neutral, detailed sound profile with the right speakers (like Spendor or Bowers and Wilkins) is something we’ve spent 25 years perfecting.
Built for the Future: Modularity and Prisma
One of the biggest frustrations in home entertainment is the "obsolescence trap": the feeling that your expensive gear will be out of date in three years. Primare solves this with a sophisticated, modular approach.
The Modular Foundation
Take the I25 or I35 Prisma integrated amplifiers. These aren't just "boxes." They are living platforms. If digital technology leaps forward, Primare’s modular design allows for hardware updates without needing to replace the entire unit. This sustainability is a core part of their heritage.
The Prisma Experience
Then there is Prisma, Primare’s proprietary control and connectivity solution. Think of it as the conductor of your digital orchestra. Whether you are streaming high-resolution files from Tidal, connecting via Bluetooth, or managing a multi-room audio system, Prisma makes it seamless.
We’ve all been there: the ultimate mood killer is an app that won't connect or a streamer that stutters. Prisma is built to eliminate that latency, providing a robust "heavy-lifting copper backbone" for your digital music library while remaining incredibly intuitive to use.

The Sound: A Symphonic Masterpiece
Technical specs like "UFPD 2 amplification" and "low-noise power supplies" are important, and we love geeking out on them in the showroom. But for you, the listener, what matters is the feeling.
Primare delivers a soundstage that is wide, deep, and incredibly precise. There is a "blackness" to the background: a lack of electronic noise: that allows the most delicate details of a recording to emerge. Whether it’s the breath of a vocalist or the trailing decay of a piano note, Primare captures the emotion of the performance. It’s not just audio; it’s a lifestyle upgrade for your ears.
If you have the time, checkout Harley Lovegrove's video on the Pre35 and a little Primare history. Harley has his own speaker company (Pearl Acoustics) but he is also a recording engineer and producer, he knows how live music sounds! The video is here; Primare, the HiFi component company that's too humble for its own good.
